Sea horses riding around Pimentel

The much bigger Chiclayo did not feel like a temporary home so we decided to spend the week of our Spanish classes in Pimentel, about 10 km away from the loud and steaming capital of the Lambayeque region of Peru. During high season it could probably feel crowded but during our visit it was perfectly laid back and offering a whole range of ocean treats. A special one in this part of the world is the ‘caballito de totora’ fishing boat — tightly packed and tied straw that has been used for centuries, though it is nowadays becoming a rarity. In Pimentel and our subsequent beach destination, Huanchaco, it is still used every day, as local fishermen ride out to the sea and return hours later, their little floating horses loaded with sea creatures that will be sold right off the beach.
